(Omaha, Nebraska/MediaQuire) The reason our New Year’s resolutions often end in regret is not we did not have the best of intentions. It’s that we did not have the best process for following through on them.
In her new book, 8 to Great: The Powerful Process for Positive Change, author MK Mueller give us a positive attitude formula that may well end up in Webster’s dictionary: FGH: Forgive the past, be Grateful for the present and have Hope for the future.
F: Forgiveness of the past
Mueller, herself a former binge eater, recalls the day she reframed the word “ch-eat” to “choosing to eat.” She simply admitted that she “chose to eat” two extra Oreos, and then wrote it down on her menu tracking sheet.
“The ability to instantly forgive myself kept me from the temptation to eat the rest of the bag out of guilt” she said. “I’ve been at my goal weight for 23 years. Forgiveness takes a weight off your shoulders and your waistline!”
G: Gratitude for the past
When working with clients struggling with debt, Mueller reminds them that, “What you think about you bring about,” coaching them to catch worry thoughts and immediately turn them into gratitudes.
“When you focus on being grateful for the roof over your head, the gas in your car and the clothes on your kids’ backs, you can’t help but feel better. You ‘get over it’ by rising above it. New options reveal themselves. As Einstein said, ‘No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.’”
H: Hope for the future
It’s been shown in numerous studies that optimists and pessimists are both right some of the time, but optimists are healthier, wealthier, happier and live longer. If that’s not enough for give your hope muscle a work-out, consider Mueller’s musing on the recession: “The Dow is nothing more than a reflection of our attitudes. To be discouraged about the fact that the Dow is reflecting that we’re discouraged is perpetuating insanity.”
So, what is Mueller’s homework for turning Resolutions into Results? Once you’ve chosen your goal or dream:
1) F- Write a Forgiveness and Freedom Letter to yourself for what’s happened in those areas in the past and burn it.
2) G - Write down 3 Gratitudes every day for 30 days. No repeats. Consider sharing them with a friend via email each day.
3) H - Every day say your goal or dream in present tense. “I am enjoying my new size 10 clothes that fit me so well.” “I am so grateful now that my money goes into my growing savings account for my new _____________.” “I am loving every minute of this new relationship and how wonderful I feel with him/her.”
Will you sometimes forget to do some or all of the above? Absolutely, says Mueller, but then you just FGH yourself. “Forgive yourself for forgetting, be grateful you remembered and have hope that you’ll remember better next time.”
